Dubuque Humane Society

I had my interview with the Humane Society here in Dubuque yesterday, it's an animal shelter for adopting, finding and saving, returning, and pet-sitting animals. Mostly dogs and cats and birds, but others go there, too. Craig Beytien, a member of the head board of the Humane Society in Dubuque, is a friend of my parents and is my Institute Teacher, so he has a position of authority over me. He called me the day he found out that the shelter wanted to hire because he knew I've been looking for a job, and he thinks I'm very adequate for the job. And with him vouching for me, I have a decent chance of getting the job. Though I still have this shadow of thought in my mind that they've already decided who to hire and I'm not one of them.. ahh don't listen to myself. :P
So apparently the person holding one of the highest positions at the shelter just walked out and quit, so what they did was promote everybody who was already working there, so now they need to hire people to do the lower jobs. Which would mean being an animal tech. Pretty much, if I get the job, I'll be cleaning up the cages and crates, changing kitty litter, all that jazz. But I've grown up with 4 dogs (plus we've fostered/dog-sat plenty of dogs along with them), so I've been cleaning up after them since I was 6. Not that big of a deal. But along with that, I'd be making sure their cages are in order, nothing's wrong with them, the animal is comfortable in them. I'd also be giving vaccinations. That was a huge part of the interview, they wanted to make sure I'm not queezy about needles. For once, having crohn's disease is giving me a HUGE advantage! I've overcome my dislike of needles after having have a shot once every 2 weeks for the last 2 1/2 years. And for that first year even, I was giving myself a shot once every week for a full year. So no, needles and shots don't bother me a bit. The other thing they really wanted to emphasize is that they are not a no-kill animal shelter. They do euthinize their animals at times. They told me even last week, they had to put down about 30 cats. I let them know I'm not overwhelmed by it, we had to euthinize our dog when she got to old and her health was poor, and I've known people who had to put down cats (barn cats and such) because they just weren't suitable with people or other animals. And sometimes you just have to put them down for population control. I completely understand, it's just a part of life and the way you need to keep that kind of a business running. No, it's not a happy thing, but yes, it's something I can live with.
Other than that, they seemed to like that I know William Intrilligator, the director of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra, and were impressed that I won the concerto competition and will be playing under his direction this fall. They were also very pleased to hear that I drive myself and have my own car, and also that I plan on working through school, and that I'll be living at home for school.
So sometime today... any minute now... maybe in a few hours... or any minute.. or possibly even tomorrow, I'll know.

gah I hate waiting.
